I have always been interested in the juxtaposition of shape, texture and line and the endless possibilities that can be reached by combining these three simple things.
I studied Illustration at Falmouth in Cornwall, followed by a number of years in Bristol before returning to Cornwall to train in Glass-blowing, a craft that has been in my family all my life. A wonderful opportunity to learn a historic craft, being taught by my Dad, and become totally immersed in the process of making.
In 2016 myself and my partner moved to Carmarthenshire in Wales and started a family and I used this as an opportunity to find a new direction for my work.
Through experimentation I discovered an affinity with textiles. Specifically freehand, improvised, contemporary patchwork and textile collage. Here I found I could combine all the elements that drive me to want to make; texture, line and shape. I can incorprate printmaking and experiment with mixing materials to create texture, use stitch to draw and endlessly play with shape and composition.
I use fabric scraps and offcuts to make a lot of my work which harmonises well with patchwork and collage. I also enjoy how this can dictate the way I make by reacting to the material and allowing it to take me on a creative exploration.
Inspiration comes from everywhere and anywhere. Within my work I am not trying to depict anything specifically but sometimes I can see hints and elements of landscape and architecture in a piece. A lot of my current practice focusses on the process and the need I feel within me to create and experiment.
